Packing for a family of six is usually a challenge. But it is a challenge I enjoy and have perfected over the years. Our larger suitcases are collecting dust in our basement. I have instead purchased six carryon bags in different colors that each of us pack. I have packed for trips of all seasons in carry-ons from summer outfits to heavier winter clothes – it is possible! Here is how I do it:
Washing Machines: Every place we rent must have at least a washer in the unit which allows for individual carry-on luggage. It is a game changer! This allows me to pack 4-5 outfits for each child in their own suitcase along with a second pair of shoes. I also pack one large ziplock bag full of toiletries for each of us. Each child gets to bring what they want in their second backpack carry-on which usually includes any electronics, snacks for the plane, books, etc.
Extra bags: I pack extra foldable bags in one or two of the suitcases. This includes a collapsible cooler bag that allows us to pack for lunches while on trips. I also pack a portable mesh bag for dirty clothes. This helps prevent our rental from having clothes thrown all over and it makes it super easy to throw in the washing machine. I also usually pack extra Ziplock bags for ice or food and will sometimes use one of the empty packed bags for souvenirs on the way back.
Packing Cubes: we have used these recently and they not only help save space, but they also simplify outfits when packed together. You can roll clothes which seems to save even more space and they are pretty inexpensive to buy and can be reused every trip.
Winter Travel: when traveling somewhere colder, it becomes trickier, but we still manage to use carry-ons! Ski trips are the hardest to pack for as you can imagine. We usually will pack only three outfits plus their ski pants, a second pair of shoes and toiletries. Then they carry their winter coats, hats and gloves on the plane with them and the fourth outfit they wear on the plane must be practical for skiing in!
Less is More: I will research to see what is nearby our rental. If there is a drug store or grocery nearby, I will sometimes forego some of the toiletries needed and just get them immediately upon landing before we check into our hotel or rental property. Take the same approach with clothes – I will pack one nicer outfit that my kids can re-wear to select dinners (usually darker color clothes in case of stains or spills).
International Travel Packing: wear comfortable shoes – there is a LOT of walking! Skip fashion for function here. Another perk of packing a carry-on is that a lot of places in Europe do not have elevators, so you need to be prepared to carry up your luggage a few flights of stairs. If you are traveling to a beach destination with coral, pack aqua socks! Not only will they protect your feet, but they make it easier to walk in the ocean as well.
