This might be my favorite island. It is the definition of a topical paradise and had the feeling more of ‘old Hawaii’ versus the other islands we visited. The landscape is lush, the coral reefs are vibrant, the beaches are pristine and the natural beauty is something you have to see to believe.
We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Poipu. We loved this hotel. It is located on the Southern end of the Island where it is most often sunny and dry. The hotel grounds were beautiful and well-manicured, it offered numerous pols and the service was top notch.
Waimea Canyon State Park: this national park is a great spot to visit for the views and scenic beauty. It is located closer to the southern Poipu area and known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” offering countless viewpoints for pictures.
NaPaili Coast: this is one of the most recognizeable coastlines of all the Hawaiian Islands. It’s rugged peaks and cliffs give way to narrow valleys with some of the most beautiful waterfalls. You can only access this either by air (helicopter) or by boat. We chose helicopter which took us in and out of the valleys.
Poipu Beach: our hotel was right along this beach, but if you do not stay in Poipu, make a trip this sunny southern shore beach. It offers a more protected area which is great for families with little kids and then the Waihoai beach area is great for swimming and snorkeling. The weather is usually sunny, dry and warm in this area as well!
Wailua Falls: these falls lie just north of Lihue (where the airport is) and are some of the easiest to access and see in Kauai. There are two waterfalls to see as well, and rain can definitely impact how much they flow.
Princeville: this is located on the north shore of Hawaii. The area is worth a visit (or a stay pending the time of the year). It receives the most rainfall so the landscape is very green and lush. It features dramatic cliffs and waters, and features some luxury hotels as well. We ate here for dinner one night and we still talk about the purple mash potatoes we had as they were delicious!
Koke’e State Park: this park offers impressive views of the lush Kalalau Valley from a 4,000 foot elevation. There is hiking and you can see waterfalls and views right from your car on the drive up!
Tunnels Beach: this was one of our favorite beaches to snorkel at thanks to its coral reefs. A lot of people scuba here too, but we were not certified. It is located on the north shore so great to visit when heading to Princeville.
Queens Bath: this sinkhole is like a pool thanks to being surrounded by igneous rock. This natural tide pool is on the northshore so check it out when you visit Princeville!
Duke’s Kauai: this is a chain restaurant but the food has always been good when we eat here! It is a good place to stop with kids as the menu features sandwiches and kid menus, and of course Hula Pie! The restaurant also features views of the ocean.
Brennecke’s: this restaurant is located in Poipu and features beachside deli sandwiches or a sit down options of salads, sandwiches and burgers!
Tidepools: we ate here primarily because it was at our hotel, but the ambiance and the food were delicious. It is a more upscale restaurant so carries a higher pricetag!
The Beachhouse: this oceanfront restaurant offers breathtaking views and sunsets. The food is delicious, but go for a cocktail if you cannot make it for dinner.
Grand Hyatt Luau: We chose this as we stayed at the hotel, but the show was good as was the food. We head back this year, and will try another luau to compare!
