Truth be told, it is not our favorite Island. The backdrop of high rise hotels and crowded beaches were not what we envisioned when going to paradise. However, we got to see Pearl Harbor and quickly learned that there are remote, serene and gorgeous beaches outside of Waikiki Beach area.
During our visit to Oahu, we stayed at the Outrigger in Waikiki Beach which had a great location and good amenities. If we were to go back at some point the Aulani Hotel is on our list to visit!
Visit Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona: Pearl Harbor is a place dedicated to remembering and honoring the brave soldiers that lost their live at the US Naval base that was attacked on December 7, 1941. If you visit Oahu, this should be at the top of your list to visit. It features artifacts and exhibits that tell an important history lesson and is great for families to visit.
Kailua Beach Park: this beach lies on the eastern side of Oahu (about 35 minutes from Waikiki Beach). It is one of the largest beaches and offers public restrooms, showers, picnic tables and lifeguards. It is great for families as the water is clear and warm for snorkeling and swimming!
Waikiki Beach: this famous stretch of narrow beach is an iconic beach you have to visit. However, it wasn’t our favorite spot due to the heavy crowds of people. It is a great place to find beachfront restaurants though and to watch surfing.
Waimea Valley: this is a beautiful place to visit as a family. It features one of the best waterfalls in Oahu and is a great place to enjoy nature! It has an easy hike that takes you through a one mile stroll of the lush botanical gardens too.
Hanauma Bay: this nature preserve is located on the southeastern side of Oahu and features a crescent shape bay that is protected by crater walls which keeps the surf safe to swim in. It is also one of our top spots to snorkel thanks to the beautiful coral reefs and tropical fish it attracts.
Hike Diamond Head: Diamond Head Crater is a great place to hike as it offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean It is also right near Waikiki Beach so you can plan to do both in one day.
Orchids fine dining located beachfront with delicious menu featuring coastal Italian cuisine.
Hula Grill: this is a chain restaurant we have eaten at across different islands. The menu has something for everyone and it is a great place for families. You need to end (or start!) your meal with the Hula Pie!
Beachhouse Moana: this restaurant features amazing views and an upscale surf and turf menu. Was one of our favorite places on our honeymoon.
Shor at Hyatt Regency: we ate the breakfast buffet here and it has a great terrace with views of the ocean!
Lulus Waikiki: this restaurants offers casual dining with views of the ocean. It features live music and a great menu.
